Designing a Deep Work Schedule That Survives Real Life
Deep work compounds. One focused hour is worth three fragmented ones. But most calendars are built to prevent it. Here's a schedule that holds up.
Pick one anchor block
Choose the same 90–120 minute window every day for your deepest work. Mornings win for most people because there's less to react to. Defend it like a meeting with your most important client.
Batch shallow work
Email, Slack, and admin expand to fill the day. Give them two fixed windows — late morning and end of day. Outside those windows, notifications off.
Leave slack in the schedule
A calendar packed 9-to-5 has no room for reality. Aim for 60% booked. The rest absorbs overruns, thinking time, and the inevitable interruption.
